GLP-1s & the Holidays: How to Enjoy Festive Food Safely and Comfortably

The holidays are an exciting time. However, if you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, like semaglutide or tirzepatide, for example, being around all the delicious food can be a challenge. Since these medications surpass appetite, you may struggle to enjoy larger meals and heavier dishes in a social environment.

At My Wellness Studio, we recommend these tips to anyone on a GLP-1 who wants to make the most out of the holiday season while keeping their weight goal in check.

1. Listen to Your Body

You know your body better than anyone else. GLP-1s will make you feel fuller faster so it’s your job to tune into what it’s telling you. If you’re satisfied after a few bites, don’t fret. That’s totally normal. Just take your time, eat slowly, and stop when your body tells you it’s had enough.

 2. Go for Smaller Portions

Many holiday meals are heavy—often full of carbs that might take longer to digest if you’re on a GLP-1. To combat this, choose smaller portions. You’ll be able to prevent discomfort while still tryign all the tasty meals. Remember, you can always get seconds if you’re still hungry. Start small. Your digestive system will thank you.

 3. Drink Water

It’s all too easy to forget about hydration—especially when you’re socializing with loved ones and truly taking in the holiday fesitivies. However, drinking water throughout each day is essential while on a GLP-1 even though you may not be as thirsty. By doing so, you can improve your digestion and overall comfort level.

 4. Prioritize Protein

Protein is your best friend when you’re taking a GLP-1. Not only will it keep your blood sugar level, it can also allow you to feel satisfied without eating too much. Before you reach for the hearty mac and chesse or rich chocolate pie, eat some turkey, ham, or any other protein-rich foods.

 5. Be Careful with Alcohol

While it’s always important to watch your alcohol consumption, it becomes even more crucial if you’re on a GLP-1. Since holiday drinks can sneak up quickly, be mindful of how and when you drink. Make sure you get some food in your system and sip your drinks slowly. Whatever you do, avoid drinking when you haven’t eaten anything.

 6. Resist the Pressure to Overindulge

Holiday celebrations and an abundance of food often go hand-in-hand. Understand you can still enjoy them without overeating or giving into your relative’s push to try everything on the table. Small portions and a focus on protein-rich foods can ensure your comfort and keep you feeling good.
